The inland region of Murcia is in its primary stage of discovery for
golf. Located in the south east of the Spanish mainland, Murcia nestles
between Castilla la Mancha to the north, Valencia to the east, the
Mediterranean Sea to the south and Andalusia to the west.
26 building applications that were submitted to the Murcia council,
only four have been accepted, restricting further building.
Two of these approvals are for new exclusive golf developments in Jumilla - the first in
the region. These developments,
Santa Ana del Monte Golf and
Golf El Castillo are now under construction.
Its climate is perfect for golf, offering a good, long season with an
average of 315 days of sunshine a year. The region has long sunshine
hours, hot summer temperatures with cool mountain breezes that make
playing golf comfortable in the high season and short winter months when
the weather is bright and mild.
Average annual temperatures are 18
degrees Centigrade, reaching 35 to 40 degrees during July and August.
This varied and fascinating country offers so much more than just
sport, with its rich historic and
cultural heritage, folklore, traditions, flamenco, fiestas, monuments
and museums.
The national monument, the Church of Santiago and the beautiful Vico
theatre are attractions that best represent Jumilla's historical
heritage. The nearby Estacada National Park has over 150 species of
plants, BBQ and picnic areas and some of the most breathtaking views – a
visit here is a must for nature lovers.
Fiestas play a big part in the country's culture and this region is
no exception. The Holy Week, the Grape Festival and the Moors and
Christians festivals are particularly famous. The Holy Week festival -
attracting 3,000 participants, and the Grape Harvest Fiesta, which
expresses the harmony between the people and the riches they receive
from the land, have both been chosen as Regional Tourist Attractions. On
the 15th August each year the colourful and very popular Moors and
Christians festival takes place.
The region is also renowned for its citrus and orange groves, olives
and almonds, and most of all its fine wines – it is one of the country's
premier wine producing regions. Many tourists take the famous Wine
Route, visit vineyards, bodegas and the local Wine Museum, stopping to
sample the outstanding wines and other delicacies.
Access to the area is very easy. Daily flights leave most UK
airports, and the low cost budget airlines offer some amazing deals. The
two local airports are San Javier, about 45 minute's drive, and El Altet
(Alicante airport), about 1 hour drive. The area will also benefit from
the new International Airport being constructed at Corvera, just 30
minute's drive away, and due for completion in 2009.
